When Tilly found out that her favourite forest was running an activity trail based on her favourite book, she couldn’t wait to go.
Throughout this year, the Forestry Commission has been running activity trails at various locations across the country, based on the book The Highway Rat by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.
Tilly’s favourite forest is Alice Holt Forest in Farnham, Hampshire. It has several walking and cycling trails, as well as children’s play trails with adventure climbing units, challenging balance beams, wobbly bridges and exhilarating slides.
Tilly followed the trail, finding panels along the way which described activities and challenges to be completed. Interacting with the forest as she headed on her journey, Tilly met The Highway Rat and all the characters from the story.
To make the journey even more enjoyable, we bought an activity pack from the visitor centre for only £3 which included a booklet with extra activities, stickers, puzzles and a Highway Rat mask. It also had a crayon for wood rubbings, a pencil and a piece of string to help make a ‘Journey Stick’.
We had a lovely time walking the trail, and finished off with a delicious ice cream at the café.
